Being A Vegan In Your 80’s Is Easier Than You Think

This is my mom Lisette. She is 83, 5’2″, 104 lb, has more energy than my 20 year old and has been a vegan for the past 40 years! She has 4 children, 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren with a few more on the way!

Out of all her kids and grand kids, more than 80% are vegan and/or plant based.  My mom set a good example of what it means to be healthy and eat healthy and taught us that you can eat your way to health.

Keeping it healthy, exercising the body and the mind, being out in nature, gardening and being one with the soil, having a positive outlook on life, AND making and sharing good food is what keeps my mom young and full of energy! As a matter of fact when you’re vegan it’s all about the food! Tasty delicious and hearty plant based food and knowing where you can get it!

What’s more fantastic than traveling and eating food? Traveling and eating good vegan or vegetarian food! More and more restaurants are giving us hearty plant based options.  My mom is a big part of my eating adventures so let’s start with what her typical day looks like and then lets move on to a few pics of my mom and our favorite restaurants.

What Lisette Eats

The day for my mom usually starts with lemon and hot water, breakfast is steel cut oats with raisins, lunch is a salad or sandwich/soap, and dinner is a vegetable medley, stir fry or typical vegan Mediterranean of Asian stir fry meal. Snacks happen often  throughout the day with at least 3-4 handfuls of nuts, good fats like avocado, plenty of lentils, garlic ginger tofu, and whatever happens to be left over in the fridge!  Favorite foods are vegan ethnic foods. Foods that really fill you and satisfy your taste buds.  First review is from Sunday brunch at Two Mama’s Vegan Kitchen in the Fruitvale section of Oakland, CA.
